Notes on the recording by Frank Orrall:
“The last 20 years touring with Thievery Corporation have taken me quite a ways around the world — the width of Europe, the length of South America, cities in North Africa and the Mid Pacific. Along the way I have been exposed to so much global music. With touring comes a huge amount of time waiting in airports, hotel rooms, back stage, riding in vans, trains… 22 hours of the day are spent getting ready for 2 hours on stage. To pass the time, I started carrying a nylon string acoustic guitar with me (without a case, so that it was always in my hands) and started collecting melodies and chord cycles that came to me along the way while moving through these experiences in the world. Recording them as I went, with portable recording devices.
This album is a collection of many of these.
I was invited to join Thievery by Rob Garza & Eric Hilton, as Rob was familiar with my work as Poi Dog Pondering. He always encouraged us all playing and singing on the tour bus as we traveled. And, in many ways, Rob put the acoustic guitar back into my hands (as I had set it down for a few years in PDP to focus on being a front man, primarily… and in the process I sort of lost contact with the guitar). He encouraged me to pick it back up. Concurrently, during this time, I became enamored with music from Portugal, North Africa, Middle East, India/Pakistan, Japan, Bolivia, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil - and especially Brazilian music of the 60’s & 70’s… Orlando Caldas, Joao Gilberto, Jorge Ben, Moacir Santos, Silvio Caldas, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Elza Soares… Many of the guitarists (especially the Brazilians) were not using picks. Instead, they were using their fingers and hands on the strings, and so I adopted that style, and started to learn the chord voicing they were using… richer, more jazz like chords… it gave the music lots of fresh color for me to find melodies in. I moved from being a more rhythmic based writer to a melody based writer. I also started collecting instruments from different countries and bringing them home to my studio, using them as texture for the new recordings.
As a musician, early on I was inspired by Penguin Cafe Orchestra and their blending of styles and acoustic textures. That spirit was coming back to me through this new music.
My friendship with Chef John Manion (MAS, La Sirena Clandestina, El Che Bar) led to forming bands to play for fun, in his bar lounges, on occasion. I began to form bands for each of his restaurants… Lost Souls of the Great Lakes (for MAS), Los Inmortales (for LSC) & recently, Mourning Doves (for El Che).
I collected the music I had written on the road and sent it to some of my simpatico musicians and Mourning Doves International was born. We played the debut show at El Che Bar.

I have found that my output of music is so varied in style and inspiration, that it is best for me to release music under different aliases (such as Poi Dog Pondering, Palm Fabric Orchestra, 8fatfat8 & Soft Explosion). I needed a new alias for this new music. Mourning Doves.
The name Mourning Doves is inspired by the sound of Hawaiian doves I grew up with out my window every morning.
The name Mourning Doves International is the name for the collective of musicians and singers I have met from around the world and feature across this album. As with PDP, it will ever evolve with the recordings”.

LYRICS

YOMAIGOTO
Lyric: Yu Aku
Music: Miyuki Nakajima

Wintry wind hitting window with sleet
Clicking sound of digital clock changes
I wonder if you are back and get out of my bed
And I sneeze once
It's my strange habit that every time after man leaves me
I always catch a cold
The world is in Midnight
Mmmm, I am still grumbling
My loving relationship does not go well because the world is fool
Either reading from above or below
YONONAKA BAKA NANOYO

My fingers peeling oranges dyed yellow
Forgotten manicure peels off and falls
When I think that cannot keep up with you anymore
I force myself to smile
And I sneeze once
It's my unpleasant habit
Every time when I feel relieved after I break up with someone
I always catch a cold
The world is in Midnight
Mmmm, I am still grumbling
My loving relationship does not go well because the world is fool
Either reading from above or below
YONONAKA BAKA NANOYO

JAGUAR

I am the jaguar in the jungle
who is moving through the leaves
I am the black bird above the mountains
who is gliding towards the sea

oooouu the night is calling me
she is in my blood stream
she is there to remind me
of all the dreams inside of me

There is a whisper in the tall grass
that is speaking through the breeze,
there is the lightning, and there is thunder
and the river, rushing over me

oooou the night is calling me
she is in my blood stream
she is there to remind me
of all the dreams inside of me

SEREIA

(Portuguese Lyric)

Olha so ela! Fez de passarela a areia do mar

Menina bela, ate o sol sorrindo vem quente te olhar

Que vibe e essa? Mesmo no verão me faz arrepiar

Eu feito pedra,
quem dera sereia em meu colo sentar e cantar
La la laia
La la laia

(A sereia canta)
So voce, que me faz mergulhar em teu mar
Meu lugar, meu bem
Meu sorriso do alem, meu zen
Meu luar, meu la la laia
La la laia

(English Translation)

Look at her!
Made of the sandy beach her runaway
(made of the sea sand her runaway)

My belle (beautiful girl)
Even the sun (the warm sun) smiling comes to look at her

What vibe is this? Even in the summer gives goosebumps
And I as a rock ( being paralyzed, hypnotized)
I wish this siren would sit on my lap and sing
La la lala laia
La la la laia

(The siren sings)
Only you ,that makes me dive
My sea, my place , my well being ( my light)
My smile from beyond ( from another dimension)
My Zen
My moon light, my la laia

DIAS DE ONTEM

(Portuguese lyric) … awaiting from Karina

AHUWALE

(Hawaiian Lyric)
Ahuwale lyrics 1 copy.jpg
Ahuwale lyrics 2 copy.jpg

PALOMITA

Para pa para
Para pa
Pa pa para ra
Una palomita blanca lamentaba su situación
Le dolian las alitas, le pesaba el corazón
No sabía de dolor, no sabía de desamor
No conocía esa realidad

FANCY,

Fancy, if you believe in what I believe in,
Then we'll be the same, always
Fancy, just look around thee
If you will fancy all the girls you see, always

My love is like a ruby that no one can see,
Only my fancy, always
No one can penetrate me,
They only see what's in their own fancy, always
